Marshals wanted

30 March, 2011 at 10:19

The organiser of three charity challenges for Care International in and around Cannock chase this summer has contacted me looking to try and recruit local marshals to help on the mountain bike course. Ideally they need to have a reasonable knowledge of the area and also be able to help with minor bike maintenance / repairs.

The events are all on Saturdays,
21st May
2nd July
3rd Sept
Marshalling would start from 0600 (for a briefing) and finish by 1730.
The organisers are willing to pay a fee to each person for their support.

Marshalling is great way to be part of an event and can be really rewarding. If anyone is interested please contact

I get requests like this all the time so if anyone is interested in other opportunities that might come up in the future please contact me

Surfacing trials (Trailbuilding – Sunday 27th March)

27 March, 2011 at 19:00

No, that’s not a spelling mistake, it should read “trials” not “trails”. Over the last few weeks, the Forestry guys have acquired various types of surfacing materials for us to trial. The latest batch is crushed gritstone which they have dropped at various locations around the Dog. This will be used to repair areas which have suffered the worst over the winter. To make this material go further and to match the colour of the existing trails, we’ll mix it with the local “as dug” material. Section 11 on the Dog is our test area as this as probably suffered most. So, while half the group broke up the existing surface of section 11 and dug off the muddy stuff, others mixed the new material with a pile of surfacing material left over from when the section was built.

After some relatively tame wheel barrowing by our normal standards, several metres of trail were surfaced with the new mix ready for Martin in fire up the new wacker. It’s a serious beast compared with our old machine – twice the size and weighing in at a hefty 80kg. so it wasn’t long before he had billard table smooth finish.

While Martin was giving the worms headaches, the rest of the team headed to the start of the section to retreave several spans of boardwalk left over from the APF show. This will be used to bridge a boggy area of the trail and add a little spice to the section …

No trailbuilding this week as most of the regular volunteers are helping marshall the Midlands XC race. Normal service will resume next week.

Midlands XC – Sunday 20th March

9 March, 2011 at 10:52

XC racing returns to Cannock with round 1 of the 2011 RRP Midlands XC Series. It’s taking place in the Tackeroo block of the Chase on Sunday 20th March. The red and blue waymarked trails will still be open on race day, but there will be marshalled crossing points with the race course, so follow the dog riders will need to be on the lookout for the caution signs.

There is a morning race at 10.30 which comprises the under 18 riders, the over 40 riders and all the female riders. At 13.00 it’s the turn of the under 12’s to take part in some short course racing, followed by all the senior male (19-39) categories at 14.00.

You can enter online here

There’ll be lots of bike bling on display in the arena and the course is a cloverleaf shape, making it easy for spectators to see riders several times on each lap.

Chase Trails will be helping marshall and will have our publicity stand up in the arena so come and say hello.
